NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Lawrence was chief among the seven deacons who served the Roman Church during the mid-third century. The young cleric held a position of great trust, caring for the goods of the Church and distributing its alms among the poor. He was arrested under the Emperor Valerian, in 258, laid upon a gridiron and slowly roasted to death. Lawrence rejoiced in his awful martyrdom and died praying for the conversion of the city of Rome, in the hope that from it the faith of Christ might spread throughout the world. From that time idolatry began to decline in Rome.

SIMPLE / RED
Cyriacus, a Roman deacon, gave help to Christians forced to labor on the Baths of Diocletian. He was arrested together with 22 other witnesses to Christ, among whom were Largus and Smaragdus. These martyrs were beheaded about A.D. 304. "They overcame . . . through the Blood of the Lamb and through the word of their witness, for they did not love their lives even in the face of death" (Apoc. 12:11).

FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS

A group of saints invoked with special confidence because they have proven themselves efficacious helpers in adversity and difficulties, known and venerated under the name Fourteen Holy Helpers. Though each has a seperate feast or memorial day, the group was collectively venerated on 8 August.

They are invoked as a group because of the Black Plague which devastated Europe from 1346 to 1349. Among its symptoms were the tongue turning black, a parched throat, violent headache, fever, and boils on the abdomen. It attacked without warning, robbed its victims of reason, and killed within a few hours; many died without the last Sacraments. Brigands roamed the roads, people suspected of contagion were attacked, animals died, people starved, whole villages vanished into the grave, social order and family ties broke down, and the disease appeared incurable. The pious turned to Heaven, begging the intervention of the saints, praying to be spared or cured. This group devotion began in Germany, and the tradition has remained strong there.

INVOCATION OF THE HOLY HELPERS

Fourteen Holy Helpers, who served God in humility and confidence on earth and are now in the enjoyment of His beatific vision in Heaven; because thou persevered till death thou gained the crown of eternal life. Remember the dangers that surround us in this vale of tears, and intercede for us in all our needs and adversities. Amen.

Fourteen Holy Helpers, select friends of God, I honor thee as mighty intercessors, and come with filial confidence to thee in my needs, for the relief of which I have undertaken to make this novena. Help me by thy intercession to placate God's wrath, which I have provoked by my sins, and aid me in amending my life and doing penance. Commemoration of  SAINT JEROME EMILIAN
Jerome Emilian (1481-1537), a member of one of the patrician families of Venice, was in early life a soldier. Captured by the enemy and thrown in a dungeon, he invoked the aid of Our Lady. Under circumstances that appeared to be miraculous, he was enabled to make his escape. The young man then dedicated himself to the service of the Blessed Virgin and began a life of intense charity, concerning himself especially with the care and Christian education of homeless orphans, victims of war and plague, whom he clothed, fed, and taught at his own expense. Later, he founded several orphanages, a home for converted prostitutes, and a hospital. In about 1532, Jerome founded the Clerks Regular of Somascha, for the continuation of his work after his own death. He died of a disease he caught in visiting the sick. Pope Pius XI declared him the patron of orphans and abandoned children.

 O God, Father of mercy, grant that we may preserve the spirit of adoption, which makes us Your children in name and in fact, through the merits and prayers of blessed Jerome, father and helper of orphans.

Commemoration of SAINT MARGARET
Margaret was tortured at Antioch in Pisidia, in the last general persecution during the third century. After having endured many torments, she finished her martyrdom by the sword.

O God, one of the marvelous examples of Your power was granting the victory of martyrdom even to delicate womanhood. May the example of the blessed virgin martyr Margaret, whose birthday we celebrate today, draw us closer to You. Through our Lord . . .

The following comes from a posting on Rorate Caeli on July 18. 


The largest diocese in the United States, and one of the largest in
the world, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, is about to officially
receive and welcome the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP),
Rorate can confirm. Rumors of this huge step for Tradition in America
had been circulating in the past few weeks, but at last we are able to
bring this piece of news to the general public.






Archbishop José Horacio Gómez receives our gratitude for warmly
welcoming an institute dedicated exclusively to the Traditional Mass to
the Archdiocese, the FSSP. The little pueblo of Nuestra Señora de los
Ángeles de la Porciúncula was founded under the aegis of the Traditional
Mass by settlers sent by Blessed Junípero Serra, so it is fitting and
proper that the Mass of Father Serra be daily celebrated in a setting
dedicated exclusively to it in the Archdiocese.


We are also informed that the FSSP will need to eventually purchase
or build a church in the city: at first, they are looking at either the
Downtown or Hollywood area. Fr. James Fryar, who will start this
apostolate (misión, we should rather say!), will be permanently in the
city beginning in August.

Thank
you Holy Father, Pope Benedict for giving Summorum Pontificum to the
Church. More than seven years ago, I never imagined that I would
celebrate the Traditional Latin Rite, let alone even figure out how to
celebrate it. I was daunted. Just the thought of it put fear into my
bones.


Just after Pope Benedict gave all priests the right to celebrate the
Extraordinary Form, I attended a Mass in my parish. I was still not
convinced of the need. Yet, at that very Mass, I received an interior
grace. It’s something very difficult to explain. I felt (don’t like to
use that word) something in the very depth of my being. I was moved in a
way that is beyond words. From that moment, I know that I had to learn
to celebrate the TLM.

The Church keeps this day for a memorial of the wonderful humility of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Having learned from the angel Gabriel that her aging cousin Elizabeth was with child, the Virgin Mother of God hastened to visit the mother of the Baptist. Elizabeth saw Mary coming to her and, filled with the Holy Spirit, she cried out, saying, "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!" Mary, hearing herself acclaimed, answered in the exultant song we call the Magnificat, praising God with all the powers of her pure soul and giving to Him alone the glory.


INTROIT
Hail, holy Mother, who brought forth the king who rules heaven and earth forever and ever!
Ps. 44:2. My heart overflows with good tidings; I sing my song to the king.

COLLECT
Grant us the gift of Your heavenly peace, O Lord. Let the solemn feast of the blessed Virgin's Visitation establish us more securely in that peace, just as the birth of Her Child heralded the beginning of our salvation. Through our Lord . . .

Commemoration of SAINTS PROCESSUS AND MARTINIAN
According to tradition, these martyrs converted by St. Peter, were jailers of the Mamertine prison in Rome.

The glorious profession of faith of Your holy martyrs Processus and Martinian overshadows and protects us. May we profit by their example and rejoice in the assistance of their prayers. Through our Lord . . .

LESSON Cant. 2:8-14 [Song.]
Behold he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping over the hills. My beloved is like a roe, or a young hart. GOSPEL Luke 1:39-47
At that time, Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda. And she entered into the house of Zachary and saluted Elizabeth. And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she cried out with a loud voice and said: "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord." And Mary said: "My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour."

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON
Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary, who bore the Creator of all things. You brought forth your own Creator, and yet you remain a virgin forever.

SECRET 
Rescue us, O Lord, through the Incarnation of Your Only-Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who by His birth did not impair the virgin purity of His Mother, but rather sanctified it. May He free us from our sins and make us acceptable to You on this feast of Mary's Visitation; who lives and rules with You . . .

Accept our prayers and gifts, O Lord. May the intercession of Your saints make these offerings worthy of You. Through our Lord . . .
