SAINT THOMAS OF VILLANOVA
Bishop and Confessor

SAINT MAURICE AND HIS COMPANIONS
Martyrs

DOUBLE / WHITE
Thomas of Villanova (1488-1555), great saint of the Spanish Renaissance and good friend of Emperor Charles V, joined the Hermits of St. Augustine, where his heroic qualities soon marked him for responsible offices in his community and then for ecclesiastical honor as archbishop of Valencia. A man of infinite charity in word and deed, he lived as frugally as the poor who benefited by his unstinted almsgiving. While provincial of his order in Castile, he sent the first group of Augustinians to the Americas. Establishing themselves in Mexico, they were integral in the growth of Christianity in the New World.

    Hello;

    Thank you for providing these Propers of the Mass. I have a few questions:

    1. I have a 1962 (Angelus Press) missal, and I attend an FSSP Mass on a frequent basis. I've noticed that the prayers that are said at Mass don't always correspond to the prayers for that date in my Missal (I understand how to use my missal, how to reference Prefaces, Masses for Martyrs, et cetera). Would you please explain this discrepancy.

    Are the prayers -- to some degree -- at the priest's discretion? There are a few occasions when alternate prayers are explicitly referenced in my Missal, but even these cases don't explain the discrepancies I am seeing at Mass.

    2. If there are alternate uses of the 1962 Proper Prayers which have been codified, would you please expound a bit on this. For example -- does the FSSP have certain traditions or a unique calendar that would explain their prayers at Mass?

    3. Do you know of a reference for the ancient Prefaces -- the ones that have fallen out of common usage? I would love to find a source for these.

    Thank you.

  2. Thanks for your comment. I use the Baronius Press Missal & The Daily Missal of The Mystical Body [1959] for all the Propers. What one Missal does not have the other does. As for why the Celebrant uses different Propers than of the day, it depends on the class of the feast, like simple, or double, etc. Sometimes any Mass can be said and sometimes only the Mass of the Day. I also have a calendar from Tan.com publishers which lists all the feast days. That's my guide. Sorry I can't answer your questions but I would ask the priest at the Mass you attend these questions. God Bless+
