Important Clarifications from Ecclesia Dei
The Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei has recently answered some important questions regarding the application of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum submitted by the moderator for the faithful attached to the Extraordinary Form of the diocese of Rzeszów, Poland. The answers, however, are applicable generally. The original questions (in German) and answers (in Italian), published by Nowy Ruch Liturgiczny are reproduced below. Here is an NLM summary; questions 2 and 3 have easily the biggest impact:
1. If there is no other possibility, because for instance in all churches of a diocese the liturgies of the Sacred Triduum are already being celebrated in the Ordinary Form, the liturgies of the Sacred Triduum may, in the same church in which they are already celebrated in the Ordinary Form, be additionally celebrated in the Extraordinary Form, if the local ordinary allows.
2. A Mass in the usus antiquior may replace a regularly scheduled Mass in the Ordinary Form.right
3. A parish priest may schedule a public Mass in the Extraordinary Form on his own accord (i.e. without the request of a group of faithful) for the benefit of the faithful including those unfamiliar with the usus antiquior. The response of the Commission here is identical to no. 2.
4. The calendar, readings or prefaces of the 1970 Missale Romanum may not be substituted for those of the 1962 Missale Romanum in Masses in the Extraordinary Form.
5. While the liturgical readings (Epistle and Gospel) themselves have to be read by
the priest (or deacon/subdeacon) as foreseen by the rubrics, a translation to the vernacular may afterwards be read also by a layman. The question contextualizes that in many churches Sunday Masses are more or less scheduled continually, leaving free only very incovenient mid afternoon slots, but this is merely context, the question posed being general. The answer leaves the matter to the prudent judgement of the parish priest, and emphasises the of a stable group to assist at Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

Again, I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, so please help me get this straight: when the above article says, "The calendar, readings or prefaces of the 1970 Missale Romanum may not be substituted for those of the 1962 Missale Romanum in Masses in the Extraordinary Form" ...
ReplyDeletedoes that mean when you celebrate a Latin mass it must ONLY be as written in the 1962 missal, using its calendar, readings, etc. ...
or does it mean when you celebrate a Latin mass you must use the calendar, readings, etc. from the 1970 missal but within the 1962 mass structure/framework (I'm not even sure of what terms to use).
I just ordered the 1962 missal from Baronius Press, and it should arrive any day now. The above point in the article made me worry that somehow it's not suitable now. Hopefully you can help straighten me out.
Also, can I ask your opinion about a Lenten exercise I've been thinking about? I've been looking forward with great anticipation to getting my 1962 missal, and I thought that maybe since I can't attend a Latin mass where I live I could learn how to use the missal and sort of "attend" Latin mass each day of Lent in my imagination, sort of uniting my heart to the mass wherever a priest may be saying it at that time, really trying to meditate on the readings and prayers, and asking the Lord to come to me spiritually during the exercise.
Thanks for any and all help, guidance, cautions you can provide!

Hi Brian in Wisconsin: First to clarify: the Mass can be said in Latin with both forms, the new Mass and the old Mass. But the readings and propers (prayers) must be the ones that were written for each form. So if the priest celebrates the new Mass, he cannot use the Extraordinary Form (old Mass) prayers and readings. If he celebrates the Old Mass (x form) he cannot use the new prayers and readings. It's all very simple and avoids confusion. I have the Baronius Missal and each day I read the prayers and readings uniting myself with all the Masses being celebrated throughout the world. I can't attend a x form Mass either as the nearest one is 50 miles away. So you are right on with that idea. It certainly will increase your spirituality! You will find the readings for Lent each day are outstanding!

Thank you so much, Deacon John!!!! Now I'm clear!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the encouragement on the Lenten exercise. I haven't ever been this excited about Ash Wednesday and Lent! I'm hoping I'll find my new missal in the mailbox tomorrow.
It's just so ... fun is the word that just comes right to mind ... how up until a few weeks ago the Latin mass was not at all on my radar screen, and now it's like a door has been opened, and I'm just gazing in wonder at the new rooms I'm walking through, seeing and experiencing things I've never come in contact with before.
Thanks again, and thank you for this website!

Prayers needed for Local Priest in Wisconsin:
ReplyDeleteI just opened this and do not know how Father Mike is doing as of now. Please do pray for him. God Bless you and thank you! Tom and Mary
Fr. Mike O’Rourke, Pastor of St. Mary Parish in Appleton WI needs your prayers.
He slipped on his driveway last night and hit his head, knocking him unconscious. He was found by the Deacon the next morning (he was laying in his driveway all evening). When he was finally found, his body temp was 90, and he has a severe skull fracture. He had surgery this morning, and is now in ICU, where they are attempting to stabilize him. At this point, his condition is critical and he needs the prayers of everyone available. Thanks for your help; we pray that God delivers Fr. Mike back to us with a full recovery.
God bless Fr. Mike!
