SAINT AMBROSE (397 A.D.); THURSDAY FIRST WEEK IN ADVENT; VIGIL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

SAINT AMBROSE

[Commemoration]
SATURDAY FIRST WEEK IN ADVENT

VIGIL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

DOUBLE / WHITE
Ambrose was Roman governor of northern Italy and still a catechumen when a popular assembly chose him to be bishop of Milan in 374. After his baptism and episcopal consecration he fearlessly resisted the encroachment of civil authorities and defended the Faith against contemporary heretics backed by successive Emperors. Ambrose was a great preacher; many of his sermons and hymns have enriched our Liturgy. He is also responsible for the "Ambrosian Rite," still used in Milan. The most illustrious of his converts was St. Augustine. According to an ancient tradition, when St. Augustine was baptized, he and St. Ambrose composed together the Te Deum, now the solemn hymn of thanksgiving of the Universal Church.

INTROIT Eccli. 15:5
In the gathering of the Church the Lord opened his mouth and filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and clothed him with a robe of glory.
Ps. 91:2
. It is good to praise the Lord, and to sing to Your name, O Most High.
V. Glory be . . .

GLORIA

COLLECT
O God, may blessed Ambrose intercede for us in heaven as he once instructed Your faithful on earth and directed them in the way of eternal salvation. Through Our Lord . . .

For the Vigil of Immaculata Conception
O God, who in her conception, didst wonderfully preserve the mother of thy only begotten Son from the stain of the original Sin, grant we pray, that thou make us so to be strengthened by her intercession as with pure hearts to take in her festival.

Commemoration of the preceding Sunday

Put forth Your power, O Lord, we beseech You, and come, that with You as our protector we may be rescued from the impending danger of our sins; and with You as our deliverer, may we obtain our salvation.
Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.
R. Amen

EPISTLE II Tim. 4:1-8
Beloved: I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming and his kingdom: Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers having itching ears: And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labor in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober.
For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight: I have finished my course: I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.

GRADUAL Eccli. 44:16, 20
Behold a great priest, who pleased God in his life.
V
. There was none found the like to him, who kept the law of the Most High.

Alleluia, alleluia! V. Ps. 109:4
The Lord has sworn and He will not repent: "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchisedech."
Alleluia!

GOSPEL Matt. 5:13-19
At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing anymore but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

The Profession of Faith is said.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON Ps. 88:25
My truth and My mercy shall be with him; and in My name shall his power be exalted.

SECRET
Almighty and eternal God, grant that the gifts we have offered to Your divine majesty may aid our salvation through the intercession of the blessed confessor bishop Ambrose. Through Our Lord . . .

For the Vigil of Immaculata Conception
May our offerings, O Lord, be commended to thy clemency by the prayer of the Immaculate Mother of God: who thou didst preserve from all stain of original sin, that she might deserve to become a fit dwelling-place for thy Son

Commemoration of the preceding Sunday

May these offerings, O Lord, cleanse us by their mighty power and thus make us come purer before You Who are their author.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
R. Amen.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON Ps. 88:36-38
Once, by My holiness, have I sworn: His posterity shall continue forever, and his throne shall be as the sun before Me, like the moon, which is forever a faithful witness in the heavens.

POSTCOMMUNION
Almighty God, grant that we who have received the Sacraments of our salvation may be helped by the prayers of Your blessed confessor bishop Ambrose, in whose honor we have today offered this Sacrifice. Through Our Lord . . .

For the Vigil of Immaculata Conception
Grant protection to our weakness, O merciful God: that we, who are preparing for the festival of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of thy only-begotten Son, may by the help of her prayers rise up from our iniquities.

Commemoration of the preceding Sunday

May we receive Your mercy, O Lord, in the midst of Your temple, and thus prepare with due observance for the coming festal season of our redemption.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
R. Amen.
