Grandson of King Clovis and of St. Clotilde of France, Cloud was taken to safety in Provence after his two brothers had been murdered by his ambitious uncles. The young prince then renounced his prospects of an earthly kingdom and devoted himself to the service of God as a monk. In 551, by the earnest request of the people, he was ordained to the priesthood by Eusebius, bishop of Paris. Later he retired to a village near Versailles, where he built and governed a famous monastery.
